Design Untold: Being Antifragile

Representation is Powerful.

Women make up more than half the population and contribute to central role in society to ensure stability, progress, and long-term development of nations so they should be equally represented. A better representation will ensure women’s voices are heard and their issues are recognised fairly.

It’s a movement where we empower women achieving leadership positions. We can educate starting from a young age to challenge rules that don’t make sense. For the outcome I wanted to produce a banner incorporated with my own illustrations and pull informations out from my presentation from Component 1 that was a total of 1000 words to summarise my research topic. After producing the banner in Illustrator Andrew provided helpful feed as we had test printed it before my final print in high quality.

As it was my first time trying to attempt a widescale banner format print there were challenges such as getting the measurements of the paper accurate, getting the print setting connected to the large format printer in our print room. Designing the layout of the banner itself was quite challenging as I had to make sure it was not illustration heavy and overpower my text. For me overcrowding was a concern as I did not want to squeeze everything too tightly and not have any breathing space between the texts and illustration.

I had to think of how someone would actually read a text, the flow and direction of where the eye would lead from one point to the other, effectively processing the information I want to put forward. In this version of the banner when I test printed it, I could tell that the size of the texts could be decreased from a 19pt to even 8pt because the final print was going to be at least a size of an A1 print so the audience would still be able to read it even though they might have to look in a bit close, but that would be the whole point of my project for people to interact with it.

To have it read up close and personal and with no chance of missing it because it actually is quite attention grabbing. One of the points from the feedback was the bottom section of the banner where it just might look to much like a hospital information brochure/poster, a little too formal so I decided to take out the blue solid box which was what I thought might have been the problem and decided to rearrange the text around while making sure the alignment were accurate and consistent.
